...And the sky was
made of amethyst
And all the stars
look just like little fish
You should learn when to go
You should learn how to say no
Hole recorded the Live Through This album in October 1993. It was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie. Most of the tracks were mixed by either Slade or Scott Litt and the exception was Gutless which was mixed by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.
The release of the album in 1994 was somewhat overshadowed by the suicide of
frontwoman Courtney Love's husband Kurt Cobain which took place seven days
prior. In a tragic turn of events, the band's bassist Kristen Pfaff also
died of a heroin overdose two months after the album's release.
Influences: Gone With The Wind, Anne Sexton, the Olympia riot grrl
movement, childhood, motherhood, womanhood and her relationship with Kurt
Cobain.
Might last a day, yeah
Mine is forever
When they get what they want...
They never want it again
When they get what they want...
They never want it again
Go on, take everything,
take everything, I want you to
Live Through This spawned 4 singles: "Miss World", "Doll Parts", "Violet" and "Softer, Softest". The album contained a cover of the song "Credit in the Straight World" by Young Marble Giants.
"Its lyrics juxtaposed visceral imagery—milk and piss and
blood—with catchy, vituperative sloganeering."
(excerpt of a
review
by Sasha Geffen for Pitchfork)
And the sky was all violet
I wanna give it violent,
more violence
Hey, I'm the one with no soul
One above and one below
Go on, take everything,
take everything, I want you to
Go on, take everything,
take everything, I dare you to
Well I told you from the start
just how this would end...
When I get what I want,
then I never want it again
Recording for Live Through This took place at the Triclops Sound Studios in Manrietta, Georgia. This studio was recommended by The Smashing Pumpkins as they had just completed their sessions for the album Siamese Dream which was recorded there.
Go on, take
everything!
Take everything!
Take everything!
Take everything!
